Mountain Boards – The Ultimate Guide to Mountain Boards in 2023

Beasts Like Powerful Electric Mountain Boards

Skateboarding at mountains is an all together different form of sport. Up there only the specially designed – Electric Mountain Boards work. You cannot pull yourself up and then come down – on a 350W, 25mm wheels – deck.

Mountain Skateboarding is now the new recreational adventure buzzing around. Past are days when skateboarders displayed their hot rising blood via ollies and switches over rails in skateparks.

After the advent of motorized skateboards – guaranteeing immense power and speed – a new form of culture came into existence – Mountain Skateboarding. Now manufacturers are designing beast like powerful Electric Mountain Boards – running on motors having horsepower beating cars and mini buses.

Are Mountain Skateboards same as All Terrain Skateboards?

Mountain Skateboarding is different from All Terrain Skateboarding. Although both these types are used as alternative terms – but is not the case. Skateboarding on Mountains – is a step ahead then All Terrain Dirt Skateboarding. In addition to hard pneumatic wheels (which is the most important feature in an AT Electric Skateboard) – Electric Mountainboards have extremely powerful motors to tug them high up and equally strong brakes to halt them when you are going down.

You will find many All Terrain Electric Skateboards – but all are not Mountain Skateboards. We have carefully hand picked best 15 Electric Mountain boards for all types of skateboarders on all kinds of budgets.

These 15 are the most Popular Electric Mountainboards as well – having endorsements from various famous mountaineers. Check the list below.

Review

Ecomobl M24 Pro is not just any electric mountain board – but in fact is a monster truck. Ecomobl fairly compares this one with Bajaboard skateboards – but more amazing is – that the 24 Pro model beats even Bajaboard’s top end 4 wheels.

No other board reviewed in this post – comes even close to M24 Pro. The next one reviewed model in the post Maxfind FF Plus – has a total of 2400 watts. This is like 10 percent power in comparison to Ecomobl M24 Pro!

This actual mountain board has 4 x 3050 Watt motors – one in each wheel. The total output is 12200 Watts which can be compared to a real size 4 wheeler. Even the ESC is latest configured to 55 Amps. All this gives it a 55% inclination! You can crawl up the mountains like Superman we guess.

M24 Pro has many distinct features than the available mountainboards in the market. Below we have listed some of the trademark qualities where it stands out –

  • The skateboard runs on 4 planetary gear drive – not belt driven motors. Imagine the power and with it just imagine the acceleration and the board’s performance.
  • Wheels are independently attached to the trucks – unlike Kingpin Trucks. This allows maximum shock absorption and optimum balance and traction on board.
  • The deck measures – 46 Inches x 19 inches. Other mountainboards stretch to a maximum of 12 inches. This one is 7 inches more wide. Just imagine the leg space and the stance – which is very important considering difficult terrains.
  • M24 Pro has 254 mm or 10 inch wide tires – having no tube inside. It’s all rubber – basically preventing it from going flat. In comparison other mountain boards have maximum 7 inch tires.

This beast mountainboard runs on 12S5P 960Wh battery which powers it for 30 miles straight. 960Wh is another world – because no other battery comes even close to these figures. Regenerative Brakes restore 22% battery juice.

Now – 30 miles again is a lot. There are only a few mountain boards – which can support these many miles – like the Maxfind FF Plus and Bajaboard Pantera. But there is a crucial difference. The battery’s mileage is inversely proportional to motor power. More the motor power – lesser the mileages. Maxfind gives you 30 miles on 2400 watts motor – whereas Ecomobl M24 Pro has a 12200 Watts motor – so just imagine the power of the battery to support these extra watts.

What we did not like much – is the charging time. Although Ecomobl officially states it takes 4 hours to charge – we interviewed one of the owners – who gave us 6.5 hours of time. As the world is progressing towards fast battery charging – this is some place where Ecomobl needs to work.

Now – the Deck. – M 24 Pro is made up of 9 layers maple + 2 layers fiberglass. The 11 layer deck is much needed – given the motor power and the large wheels. With the independent suspensions and marvellous torque and maximum traction – the deck is a rocky structure to stand upon. It is huge too – measuring 46in x 19in x 12in.

It is a very heavy machine – all built from aluminum – except for the deck. Even the skateboard spares – like the shock absorbers, hubs and gears are aerospace grade aluminum.

The overall weight of the mountain board is 55 lbs – or 25 kg approx. That is a lot of burden on your shoulders. Well, the real dedicated mountainboards cannot be built handy. And this one is like a beast. You cannot compare a rabbit to an overgrown lion of mountain boards.

The good part being – it can support 330 lbs or 150 kg. So almost all size skateboarders can use it. However – this is not some machine to be ridden by kids and even early teens. It is heavy and extremely powerful. Secondly even you being a professional is highly advised to use all the required protective gears.

Review

Maxfind FF Plus Super Range is one of the rare Electric Mountainboards to run for 30 miles straight. There are not many boards that can make this far except for some (Wasp – which beats even this one). We skated from Manhattan to Yonkers and back again – and still there was a lot of electric power left! Although rolling it on streets is an insult to the large 165 mm wheels.

It runs on 2 x 1200 watts motors and has a plus 35 degrees inclination – which makes itself lift pretty swiftly on steep hills The ESC tries to make it’s efforts show too – provided it is one of the latest Hobbywing 9005 model. But the magic and the Maxfind USP is in Molicel 187Wh, 36V Battery which gives it such great mileage.

In addition to this there are two more factors increasing your mileage when on board. The Electronic Regenerative Braking system and Swappable Batteries. So if you add one more pack of lightweight battery along – it will make FF Plus – support 60 miles! This is insane and we have never come across any electric mountain board having this much juice.

The deck is Fiberglass and PPS measuring 38 inches in length. Fiberglass makes the skateboard very flexible and also thin. Width of the deck is 13.4 inches – which is considered paper fine. Deck stands at 6.1 inches above the ground (clearance) because of large size wheels – making your ride very comfortable and shock resistant.

The overall weight of the board is 11.2 Kg or 24 lbs. Considering it being an All Terrain Electric Mountain Board – the weight is pretty justified – in fact we would call it a lightweight board. Kingpin trucks are good (not the best) but the handle is perfectly placed – making the mountainboard easy to carry.

The only thing we did not like about Maxfind’s this model – is it’s maximum weigh limit. 100 kg is average mark. For heavy weight skateboarders – you need something post 125 kg. And especially for a board costing +$1k – you need to make everything universal. So that anybody and everybody can hop on it.

Teamgee H20T is the hot cake. Thousands of this variant are running currently in LA and NY. The brand is pretty famous for all it’s H Series budget electric skateboards – with H20T being the latest and the most sophisticated.

Calling it an Electric Mountain Board or Not – is pretty much your call. We have included it in the list – because of 103mm rubber wheels widened by 24 holes and a pretty sturdy Teamgee’s own deck. Basically you can cruise on it over hills and mountains – but you cannot expect to go rough like Ecomobl or Raldey Wasp.

H20T runs on 1200 Watts total power. This is like 1/20th of Ecomobl and 1/10th of Maxfind’s FF Plus. The watts are enough for a decent speed of 26 mph. The board has 30 degrees of hill climbing which is again adequate. You have 4 different speed and brake modes – making it good for beginner as well as professional skateboarders.

The skateboard comes with two battery variants – 7.5 AH and 9.6 AH. With the standard version you can go a little above 15 miles and with the enhanced 9.6 version you can go 22 miles. 22 miles is great! You can cover the whole city to and fro.

The best part with Teamgee’s H20T is the variety you get in choosing wheels. The mountain board comes with 103 mm rubber tires with 24 holes. This allows it better traction and stability. Shock reduces significantly. We own this board so here every word is backed by our own experience.

Along with rubber wheels – you get PU wheels free. The offer although initially listed for a limited period of time – is assumed to be life long – as Teamgee has never withdrew it. PU wheels make it one of the best street skateboards – coupled with a powerful motor and battery.

It does not end here. You can select 120 mm cloudwheel kit too for extra 139 dollars. Although you pay a little extra – but it significantly increases the versatility and the usability of the electric skateboard over a wide array of terrains.

Another feature which excites us every time we take H20T out for a ride is it’s inevitably fast acceleration. You can go 0 – 26 miles in 3-5 seconds. This is insane! We own a Toyota Corolla and it barely reaches 24 in 5 seconds. For speed enthusiasts and professional skateboarders – this is a welcome promotion.

H20T has 8 layers Canadian + 1 ply fiberglass deck. It is definitely not as strong as Ecomobl Beast – but is strong enough to suffice the shocks and dirt on mountains. The deck stability is further enhanced by W-shaped foot sockets and warped sides with concave wheels.

The only reason we have notoriously included it with other very high end and bull like powerful electric mountain boards – is it’s weight and size. The board weighs 20 lbs – which is like half of 40 lbs Wasp and M24 Pro! And it measures 39 x 9 x 0.6 inches. Just look at the 0.6 inches width – which makes it like the thinnest electric mountain board ever if you consider it to be a mountain board.

Teamgee H20T has many benefits and one major con. It is a versatile, universal, very thin, portable and a cheap electric mountainboard. The con is that it does not have the best wheels or the strength to go wild like other heavy duty mountain boards. You can just enjoy the bare minimum on hill on it. While on street and concrete it will behave like a pro. So the choice is yours. Prioritise your need and then click at the Buy button.

We have included this skateboard in the mountain boards’ list – just to give you perspective.

Raldey Boards is a dedicated All Terrain Electric Skateboard Brand featuring some of the very strong and powerful boards. Wasp – their latest – tops all their merchandise. You can presume it’s power just by having a look at it’s structure. It looks like a body builder – having bulging biceps.

Raldey Wasp is extremely strong. It is powered by 3000 Watts motor. Wasp 40S – which is the upgraded model has twice the motor power and stands at 6000 Watts. The Skate board can go 39 miles per hour! This is like 63 km which is insane. Even electric mountain bikes – do not go this fast – making Wasp – one of the fastest electric mountainboards.

The heavy motor coupled with the latest ESC – can elevate the board 40 degrees above the ground. After Ecomobl M24 Pro – no other board has these many Watts and not this climbing range either.

The board is equipped with 21700 Core 12S4P Integrated 907.2WH battery which gives it 35 miles of mileage. Again it beats most of the electric mountain boards here. Both Maxfind and Ecomobl – have 30 miles of super range. This one goes 5 miles beyond. Converting this to km is like 57 kms! The board is a definite wild beast ready to be tamed.

Our favourite part remains the Deck. The 3K Handmade T700 Carbon Fiber IP65 Waterproof Deck gives the skateboard an extremely bold look and makes it very sturdy and flexible. It’s cuts and seam is just perfect – which appropriately blends with the powerful motor and the battery packs attached below. The board is very wide measuring 38.5 inches with 10 mm depth concave giving you a lot of leg space and balance and hold.

The wheels are huge. They measure 200 mm – only second to Ecomobl M24 Pro – which has 254 mm. To support these large size wheels Raldey has put 12 inches Trucks. The trucks and the wheels make the ride very stable and shock proof even on rocky trails.

The mountain board weighs 42 lbs which is a lot of weight on your shoulders. But to cover up for this downside – the board can accommodate 485 lbs of load. You read it right it is 220 kg. No other electric mountain board reviewed in this post can handle so much of weight. This extra load limit is very helpful when you are carrying some lbs on yourself while on the board – like an extra battery or some other protective gears in a bag pack adding some 5 – 7 kg.

KYNG has a reputation for building high-end low profile skateboards. They have one machine for every road. The one reviewed here – is the 40 inch electric longboard mountain board which is very cheap in comparison to the three bulls – ecomobl m24 pro, raldey wasp and maxfind ff plus.

There are some great features which makes it a universal board for everyone in your household. The machine is powered by 2 N63 825 W motors. So the cumulative power is 1650 Watts. The Watts are not very low and not very high either.

It can push the board for 25 mph which is good. Even the 12200 Watts Ecomobl Motor – pushes it for 30 miles and costs you almost 4 times the price of this KYNG Mountainboard. The hill grade is not mentioned anywhere – but we assume it to elevate 25°.

The motor and the ESC supports 4 different speed modes. If you are a beginner you can start with 12 miles on the “S” slow mode and as a professional you can go high up to the maximum.

We were not very impressed by the 11000 mAH battery resulting in 12-15 miles of range. KYNG advertises this as an electric mountain board – and for mountain boards you need at least 20 miles of range. Nowadays even the basic street electric skateboard goes long than this. You definitely need to carry an extra battery pack along.

Deck is more than good. It has almost 11 layers in total which is quite handsome. 8 layers of Canadian Maple sandwiched between 2 Bamboo layers and the upper portion is protected with an additional fiberglass layer. This makes the mountain board very hard and very comfortable to ride upon. The flexibility along with the rigidity is great.

We were impressed by the tires position too (not the size). Aligning with the deck – they measure 20 cm x 4 cm and are pneumatic rubber. Placed using reverse mounted bridge – they do not elevate the deck very high from the ground. This makes your ride close to the ground which again adds comfort and stability.

KYNG is obsessed with it’s new Ergonomic Remote which has an LED screen with plenty of controls and indicators. We suppose the only element of surprise is the LED in place of LCD’s used in cheaper variants of Mountain boards. You have to decide how much the screen material matters to you. For us – it’s not something to drive us to buy the board.

The price is not very high but not very cheap either. We think the main element which increases it’s price is the deck and the motor. Rest all mountainboards are not very heavy and not aluminum either. Below we have reviewed mountainboard cheaper than this one.

What we loved about this machine is it’s universality – even an 8 years old can drive it! Secondly it supports a lot of load – opening itself for all weight skateboarders. And lastly the charging time – which is just 2 hours. No other mountain board gets charged this fast.

Pros

How do you make an Electric Mountain Board?

Making an electric mountain board all by yourself can be a lot of fun and engineering together. If you are good with basic engineering terms and concepts only then we advise you to try a DIY. Else you will need multiple try and errors before you will finally have something which can move.

We have summarised below the diy electric mountain board process in small steps. For details you can visit Instructables post and Lee Wright’s tutorial. The documented process alongside the video will best direct you to make a working mountain board.

Note – While learning to build a mountain board for yourself you might end up spending more dollars than buying a ready-made.

Step 1 – Procure the Materials. Below is a list of the very necessary materials – without which the very existence of an electric mountainboard ceases.

  • Motor
  • Battery
  • Deck
  • Trucks
  • Wheel Gears, Hubs, Drives
  • ESC and Skateboard Remote Controller

We suggest to procure at least these materials readily. If you try to make even these parts yourself – you will need a lot of cutting and finishing tools and at least a week to complete the whole process. Just the battery will take about 8 hours and drying of the glued deck sheets will take 48 hours!

Step 2 – Assemble the Skateboard Parts.

  • The battery will be mounted above the deck and the motor will be alongside the trunks on the wheels.
  • Mounting the battery to the deck with spacers is important to ensure the flexibility of the deck
  • ESC Controller will be put at the rear or the front end of the deck.
  • Put gears one millimetre apart from the trucks and then put the wheels.
  • Bolt the trucks and connect the springs. The springs are essentials for the side tilting of the deck which is a crucial differentiation between an electric skateboard and an electric mountainboard.

Step 3 – Test Ride

Even after doing all the maths right – going on a mountain with your freshly baked (assembled) mountain board can prove risky. It is wise to test it near your vicinity. Check for squeaky noises – which will indicate a lose bolt, nut. Also check the flex of the deck be applying force from every angle possible. Once you are pretty sure about it’s performance – land it on rough difficult terrains.

How much does it cost to build an Electric Mountain Board?

Building you own electric mountain board can be 2 to 3 times less expensive – but not the first time. While experimenting you will need extra spare parts and will be left with a lot of damaged decks and not used scrap.

A diy mountain board of 10000 Volts can be easily made in less than $600. You need to purchase everything from whole sellers and also put all your mechanic left overs to use. A lesser volts mountain board can be engineered even more cheap.

But DIY Electric Mountain Board is only advisable to mechanics and long time mountain sports enthusiasts. If you are buying a mountain board for fun – and 99 percent of the consumers only buy it for cruising and weekend gala time – then just go with a ready made. It will save you all the hassle and the time – which you can better use to earn the difference money.

Are Electric Boards Worth It?

Electric Boards are totally worth it. They have numerous benefits over other modes of transportation.

  • They are fast so you can rule out the non electric modes of travel.
  • They are light in weight and extremely portable so you can cut off all the bulky electric bikes or other electric cycles.
  • Electric Boards are a great alternative to gasoline fuels and save a lot of carbon footprint. Here, you can literally chalk off all the hydrocarbons operated vehicles.
